MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist:
Album:

Joining both, Beyonce and the Foo Fighters, the first to confirm performances at the 2008 Grammys will be Alicia Keys, Feist, Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley.

Others slated for the event include divas Aretha Franklin and Mary J. Blige, the Clark Sisters, Israel and New Breed, Trin-I-Tee 5:7, Rihanna and the Time. In addition, the Grammys will give tribute to the Beatles with the casts of the film Across the Universe and "The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil."

That's it? No Ringo Starr of Paul McCartney? Pretty disappointing considering a couple years back the Grammys got Sly Stone to reappear from his seclusion.

The 50th Grammy Awards will air on February 10th from Los Angeles' Staples Center, 8pm ET/PT on CBS.

Just out of curiosity - even as an older person, who tends towards more accessible (middle of the road) music.. the Grammy's lost any relevance for me long ago.. perhaps an informal poll would be interesting to see if it's just me.

Do the grammy's hold any relevance to the general music listening public? Or, like Miss America, have they really become an anachronism, a remnant of something that used to matter?

I think I like watching them more for what people wear to the event and who they have on their arm. JK. I mean, they do manage to have some epic performances. Eminem and Elton John holding hands? The Sly thing...

Every year, I see the likes of Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Ashanti, rock schlock, Joss Stone, Beyonce and other "shake dancers," Amy Winehouse, rappers with pants hangin' off their butts, people who speak like they never had any education and country hicks, all thanking God for giving them meager "talent."

I'M SICK OF IT!!!

Most of the audience of REAL TALENTS look on in disbelief as questionable "talent" strolls up to receive Grammy Awards for mediocre recordings.

Well, this year, one of the truly talented ones, Bettye LaVette, will be sitting in the audience instead of being on stage. What a shame and a missed opportunity.

..I don't want to get all ramped up like I have on some other blogs, but, in general I'm just getting really sick of the fascination with celebrity as opposed to talent.. and the grammy awards for me, some time ago, became a musical version of people magazine. I think I might respect them more if they announced the winners more honestly, like, "And this years grammy, for the musician appealing to the least common denominator in American society is..."

I have to admit that I did watch the Eminem/Elton duet.. but, I couldn't help but feel just a little bit like it was really some publicists wet dream to have gay-bashing Eminem arm in arm with Elton on national television.. which, incidentally, was followed up by his most commercial release ever, "Without Me" on the somewhat foregettable "The Eminem Show" album..

It always struck me that the core attraction of Eminem was the atomic bomb that he planted in the midst of the policitically correct thought police in society.. and for him to sort of step up with Elton John at the Grammy's saying, "let's just all get along".. well, I have to say, I found it a little sad..

..and don't get me wrong.. I love Elton John, but I love him because of "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" and "Captain Fantastic".. not because he is gay, or was friends with Gianni Versace or Diana..
