And yet, I'm entertained. (Even though Pink is lookin' entirely too much like Vanilla Ice reincarnated as a pole dancer...)

What's odd is that whereas, based on her concert videos, Pink is a v.big star who puts on elaborate stage shows and can fill Wembley, the two times she's come to San Francisco, she's played the Warfield and the Fillmore, with stripped-down rock shows that fit the venues, esp. the Fillmore show. What's sad is that she's only been here twice. C'mon Pink, you've got a MOG, maybe you'll see this ... come back to the Bay Area!

Artist: Album: Track:

1. Hüsker Dü, "New Day Rising." This is a very college-rock oriented list, because that's mostly what I listened to from 1981-1987, and over the years, those songs have made it to my hard drive. If I remember correctly, this song was the epitome of the Huskers for my son, who was 10 at the time ... his version of hardcore was "newdayRIsing, newdayRIsing, newdayRIsing!"

2. Run-D.M.C., "King of Rock." But not everything was college rock. Most times, when an artist cuts a followup to a hit that copies the original, it's not as good. "King of Rock," though, might be the equal of "Rock Box."

3. Suzanne Vega, "Marlene on the Wall." One of those really bad segues that shuffle play often coughs up. Nothing wrong with the song, it just sounds odd coming after Run-D.M.C.

4. Dramarama, "Anything, Anything (I'll Give You)." College rock returns. One of those unstoppable songs that you can play ten times in a row. I don't think I could name a single other song Dramarama recorded.

5. Freddie Jackson, "Rock Me Tonight." Shuffle play strikes again. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single radio station in 1985 that would have played both Dramarama and Freddie Jackson, much less play them one after the other.

6. The Pogues, "Dirty Old Town." I love the comments on the video at YouTube: "He doesn't need pretty teeth...Shane is a musical genius. Who the heck cares what he looks like?"

7. Whitney Houston, "The Greatest Love of All." Speaking of pretty teeth. Maybe it's just me ... I've never been a fan of Whitney's ... but are the lyrics to this song revolting? "Learning to love yourself, it is the greatest love of all." Yeesh. Don't worry about anyone else, just love yourself and the world can take care of itself.

8. Toy Dolls, "We're Mad." Whitney Houston is why college radio was necessary ... there had to be a place where I didn't have to listen to her crap. Does anyone talk about Toy Dolls anymore? For awhile there, they were all over the local college station.

9. Camper Van Beethoven, "Take the Skinheads Bowling." Camper Van was played a lot, as well, but then, they were local, if you call Santa Cruz local to Berkeley, which I do.

10. New Order, "The Perfect Kiss." Not really college "rock", although college radio is where they got played. Second only to Hüsker Dü in my heart, of the acts on this list.

"The Greatest Love of All" is notable for being one of Patrick Bateman's musical causes célèbres.

I'm sure he would have considered "Skinheads"  entirely too decadent.

I actually had to learn "Greatest Love of All" on piano when I was little.  I don't even think I knew the song until I learned it.  Sadly the lrics are burned into my brain.  No wonder I gave up on piano.

Thanks for the Los Lobos track.

I've heard Fats Domino and Wayne Fontana do this, but never LL.
