A local radio station had a good morning show that plays music. Shocking, I know. At the top of every hour, they have a thing called "What's The Point?" 5 songs are played and the listener has to guess the point of the 5. Madison Square Garden
R.E.M. is "pretty much a great live band," Michael Stipe once said (i.e. in our SXSW interview earlier this year). Said words echoed in my head, high expectations pulsed in my veins, as I traipsed in to Madison Square Garden this Thursday. It's safe to say after all these years that R.E.M.'s best selling song is their greatest, I think. As someone who was there almost at the beginning, I feel qualified to say that Losing My Religion will stand the test of time as one of the Greatest. Pop. Songs. Ever.

REM absolutely roared during their long set at the Mann Music Center on Wednesday night! I'd never seen them before (not sure how that happened), so when the tour began I told my wife we must must must see them. So I bought the tix,,, we figured out a babysitting plan, etc, and were all set. As events transpired however, it turned into just me going and then contacting an old college friend to join me. Stereogum (who I just noticed refer to our own Michael Goldberg as 'One of the cool kids') have posted video of R.E.M. performing 'Hollow Man' on 'The Colbert Report'. It's a pretty solid performance, but the highlight on the page is some Youtube footage from Jones Beach, where the band preceded 'So Central Rain' with a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Have You Ever Seen The Rain?'

While we were in Italia, hanging at our beach side hotel in Mira and in between sight seeing trips to Roma which is 45 minutes away, Michelle and I would watch MTV. The cool thing about MTV in Europe is unlike in the States they show actual videos. We saw some classic, some new ones and some guilty pleasures.
As you might already have known, R.E.M. is huge in Europe. They're bigger and more popular over there than in America. What's wrong with us? I like to think wit... MORE

Stipe and the rest of R.E.M. will now release the 192 page book R.E.M. HELLO consisting of pictures taken by Seattle-based photographer David Belisle on June 1st.
Of the 192 pages, 175 of them are color and black & white photographs of the band. According to book's publisher Chronicle Books:

There's been a lot of hype and publicity because, yes, REM have released a new album. It's their best ever.
Or, that's what I am led to believe by everything I read.
It's loud! It's rocky! It's better than Around the Sun!
And yet.... last time they came out with something loud and rocky, following on from two more melodious albums, REM were slaughtered in the press; hung out to dry; Does anyone remember Monster and the reviews from back then? I liked Monster. ... MORE

Cripes, I have no excuse for not writing. But now, after hearing a bunch of new music seeing a bunch of bands, I've got a Mog backlog. So now I'm going to make up for it.

Let's start from the beginning. Last Thursday, I headed to an opening of Ryan McGinley's photography in Soho, innocently with my good friend Spyro.
Some background: Ryan McGinley is an ingenue- his photos both gritty and ethereal. This show- was dosed in blissed out sunshine- of celestial beings- afloat in liquid, suspended in air- battling with gravity- lost in fields.

Being an olds, I can still remember vividly the first flush of "that-is-fucking-genius" feeling that I heard on Murmur and the Chronic Town EP. REM over the last three decades - Geebus, can it be that long? - has consistently issued some of the best, sweetest, saddest, and occasionally hip-groovin' sounds out there. Which is absolutely amazing for a ROCK band of that age.

Barack Obama is gaining ground! The Phillies are finally out of the metaphorical basement of the MLB! And (most importantly), R.E.M. are kickass again! I can die happy!
I heard Supernatural Superserious on 104.5 fm the other morning, and was really just surprised that Michael Stipe & co. can still write a damn good song, especially after the bleh they've been putting out lately. Great riff, great lyrics, great backing vocals even.
