im starting to think all bands from iceland sound like this...

parachutes (insert golden parachute joke here) opened for sigur ros last sunday and i couldnt have asked for a better introduction to one of my favorite bands. leading up to the concert i was wondering if there were going to be any opening acts at all, being that i had not heard of any particular band nor saw any other name on the bill. i was a little disappointed when i walked up to the merch table and picked up the ep to an unfamiliar band (i kinda just wanted to jump right into the pool of sigur). i tossed the five dollar, three track disc back on the table and walked away. the lights went down and the show officially began. after a brief trombone solo, a flurry of twenty somethings entered from stage right. what followed would catch me off guard. they were terrific. like sigur ros vs. los campesinos. if they were a drink they would be "sigur ros lite." if they were a vitamin they would be sigur ros 'kids edition.' not that they are bad, but taste different. and who knows, maybe theyre even better for you. i started to regret my decision earlier, so during one of their slower songs (turns out to be their last) i jetted out of my seat, down three flights of stairs, and back to the merch table. five bones for an EP? pshhhhh, thats mere peanuts. i Rocky'd my way back up the steps and to my seat just in time to catch them taking a bow. i applauded the soft spoken iclanders and sat back down. a few moments later i would be shown to my correct seat by the usher (oops).
never mind the video, just listen...

I Just got home from seeing Sigur Ros. Swooooooooooooooon. The deed is done. I can die... right after I see them again. I was sitting up on the third tier, where I got a great view of the band as well as everyone's iphone.

The acoustics at Benaroya Hall are amazing. The band couldn't sound any better live. Before the show started, my friend Bergy and I took bets on which song they would open with. He was thinking the epic "Festival" would be perfect, and I went with the safe "Glosoli" which I would unexpectedly not hear all night. That and not hearing "Olsen Olsen" would probably be the only downside to the whole evening. Also the missing accompaniment of quartet Amiina was definitely noticed, but now I'm just splitting hairs. Kjartan (with bright blue shoes) Jon (with fashionable mullet) Georg (with quaint top hat) and Orri (crown and pink pants) took the stage at approximately 9:09 pm, opening with a surprising choice.
The set list that my huge brain remembered goes as follows:
1) Heysatan
2) All Alright
3) Untitled #6 (aka E-Bow)
4) Ny Batteri
5) Untitled #4 (aka Njosnavelin)
6) Vid Spilum Endalaust
7) Hoppipolla
8) Meo Blodnasir
9) Inni Mer Syngur Vitleysingur
10) Vidar Vel Til Loftarasa
11) Saeglopur
12) Festival
13) Gobbledigook
Encore
14) Fljotavik
15) Untitled #8 (aka Popplagio)
During "Vidar Vel Til Loftarasa" the band paused, and just stood their for a good 30 seconds or so. The entire concert hall went silent. I'm talking dead air, and everyone was holding their breath for what felt like an eternity. "Festival" would earn a much deserved standing ovation, and some of the fun visual elements included small cameras hidden inside their pianos. It even started snowing confetti during "Gobbledigook."

I swear when I got home I found little pieces of colored paper in places I never imagined. They ended their show with the twelve minute monster, "Popplagio." I will forever have that performance burned into my brain. It's just something that has to be experienced first hand.

That sounds just amazing. I am indescribably jealous!
You may die now, but I must keep holding out for a show near me!
Thinking of Saeglopur live just gives me the shivers. In a good way.
i heard this song on the radio the other day and really got hooked on some of their stuff. the band is 'does it offend you, yeah?' and the popiest song on the album is getting sprinkled on the fm waves. i love 'dawn of the dead' but was surprised to find the rest of the album sounding more like a mix of justice, polysics, crystal castles and a splash of digitalism. lots of vocoder and experidance elements. and with instrumental songs like 'attack of the 60ft lesbian octopus' one gets the aftertaste of aquabats.

Its odd (and a little disconcerting) to hear an 80's sound and thinking of it as retro. The posted track Dawn Of The Dead, is deceptive, the lyric is as forelorn as the title but the music is popish, darkly popish to be sure but...popish.
I found the soundtrack to the vid (which I didn't watch) to be at least as interesting aurally. But the vocoder is superfluous, distracting.
