Artist: robot conductor

Classical music enthusiasts long have sought to drum up support for the musical genre among young people, and now they have a secret weapon: the 4-foot-3, childlike robot ASIMO, reports Yahoo.

On Wednesday (May 14), the day after the Honda robot conducted the Detroit Symphony, ASIMO warmed up a crowd of 250 schoolchildren who came to the concert hall to watch a master class with cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

ASIMO — which stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility — ran, danced and kicked a soccer ball to the delight of the students.

"It was phenomenal. I had no idea of the level people were developing robots," said Sam Pernick, a 16-year-old cellist from the Detroit suburb Huntington Woods.

Eric Hwu, 14, a fellow musician from Bloomfield Hills, said he thinks a robot like ASIMO could potentially play a musical instrument, but in the meantime, it could get kids excited about technology.

"A lot of kids I know think robots are cool and would be interesting to work on," he said.

He he he he! Great picture!

Yeah yeah. Robots conducting. Nobody pays the conductor any mind, anyway.

It's when they start PLAYING - THAT's when you get concerned....

Man do I love robots. Outfit that thing with a flamethrower, a cooler and a kickin' sound system and he'd be the perfect Wingman.

Nailosity--I hate to disagree...but if they put out an album completely performed by robots, I would be first in line to download that....Heck, I would even go to an actual store and BUY a copy...with actual dollars!

...Especially if it were performed by 40 foot-tall Godzilla-fighting style robots...only with a wicked Hendix-esque frontman, er, front-bot.

I can hear it now...

"Asimo, put down the baton!" "I'm sorry, I can't do that, Dave." "What's the problem, Asimo?" "I think you know very well what the problem is."

And almost no one noticed when he kept saying "EX-TER-MIN-ATE! EX-TER-MIN-ATE!"

But what no one knows is that the regular conductor is a Cylon skin-job.

Mollifire, you're right of course (about the Daleks). I always thought when I was a kid that they were robots, only found out different as an adult and that comment was a brain-fart coming out.

true enough. i don't think anyone saw inside a Dalek during the early versions. i'm pretty sure the first time I saw the squishy alien part was on one of the more recent versions of the series.
