Tom Waits was awarded the key to the city of El Paso, Texas. Although the key was bestowed to the legendary bluesman man in a unceremonious way Waits was visibly moved, reports NME.

He was not expecting the honor when a uniformed officer walked on-stage at El Paso's Plaza Theatre, where he was performing. "I paid all those tickets," Waits quipped when he saw the officer, adding "She was dead when I got there." El Paso councilwoman Susie Boyd then came onto the stage and handed Waits a plaque, which held a key to the city.

"This is a first for me, a real first," an emotional Waits explained to the El Paso audience.

As previously reported, Waits is on the first leg of his Glitter and Doom tour which(dates below) . The 58 year old legendary entertainer's last album, Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards(Anti), was released in November 2006,
