Augusts1: "Jason Pierce is maddening. His live performance at the

MrFrost: "G-Unit's been in the news all year, and sadly the vast majority of their headlines had absolutely nothing to do with music. Whether it was Tony Yayo's assault case, 50 Cent's mansion being burned to the ground, or Young Buck being kicked out of the group, G-Unit has been more of a soap opera than legitimate rap crew. However, if you look a bit under the surface you'll find some of the hardest working musicians in the game."

That is whether or not it is the job of pop music in general to provide a catchy melody with which to sing along in the car or should it shine a light on man's deepest desires and faults?"

Album: Fleet Foxes
Chalky: "Entering the UK album chart at number 11 this week, new comers Fleet Foxes are giving a "whatsup wave" to the industry biggies just ahead of them such as Coldplay, Duffy, Neil Diamond, Paul Weller and The Fratelis. This is all the more impressive when you notice that L.A. rockers Weezer charted at only number 21 this week with their new album. Either Fleet Foxes are being majorly hyped (not really – just the same old Duffy and Lil Wayne posters everywhere in London), they've been given a load of great reviews to encourage something new and different into the music world or they are actually pretty good."

Spencer Owen: "Maybe for good, maybe not, but right now I'm done listening to Circus Money by Walter Becker. I've given it a few spins, had my laughs with its perverse lyrics (real example: "Mind meld... a permanent picture of your pussyprint in cement") and smarmy charms, enjoyed its middle-aged white guy skankin' rhythms as much as that's possible (the three reggae songs are the three best songs: "Downtown Canon," "Bob Is Not Your Uncle Anymore," and "Do You Remember the Name"), indulged my Steely Dan fandom ("that's classic Becker," I would have thought to myself at times, were I not under the illusion of retaining some youthful dignity), and now I'm done."

Mogger of the Week
Say hello to carmensandiego!
One conversation with carmensandiego is all it takes to realize how hooked on music she is. "I just love music, all kinds. I won't even discount modern country." Music was constantly around her as a child. She recalls one of her earlier musical memories to be "my mom driving me to school in the first grade and the Beach Boys' 'Barbara Ann' came on the radio. It was only half over by the time we got to school, and I refused to get out of the car until it was over."
Her father, a multi-talented "music nut," also influenced carmensandiego's taste and devotion to music. "He made damn sure his kid liked music. He's a classic rock and blues kind of guy, so some of that rubbed off on me," she says. "One of my favorite things is when I turn him on to some of my music. So far he likes Ryan Adams and The Cure. He's worked out 'Just Like Heaven' on his guitar and he plays it whenever I visit."
"I go to concerts all the time, ever since my dad took me to see the Rolling Stones when I was eight." If dear dad didn't influence her love of concert-going, then perhaps carmensandiego never would've hitchhiked to Depeche Mode (one of her favorite bands, more specifically "anything from 1983 to 1993, aka the Alan Wilder years."
"I lived in Jacksonville, FL, and the show was in Orlando, which is about a three-hour trek. So, when I was at a Barnes & Noble one day, in the magazine section, I noticed a guy checking out a DM article and I started a polite conversation - which is better, Violator or Black Celebration? - that led to the following lie: 'Hey, I have a ticket to the Orlando show, but my ride bailed on me.' He offered to drive me, so we exchanged numbers, I begged my dad to take me to the nearest TicketMaster outlet, and the next day I was in a car full of Philipino boys rocking out to very loud but very good reggae. Then we went to the show, which was AWESOME by the way. I never saw them again. I don't even remember their names."
Her teen years were spent hanging out at Einstein A-Go-Go, an all-ages club. "They played goth, punk, techno, indie, R&B, one-hit wonders, 80s, metal, all the stuff the popular kids probably didn't listen to. We prided ourselves on that." carmensandiego was introduced to lesser known music there and was able to see Luna, Mike Watt and the Geraldine Fibbers play the club. She also remembers, "I actually saw Shannon Wright there in 1995 when she was a part of Crowsdell. I found out 'who she is' last year, and it blew my mind. I watched this lady perform 13 years ago, when no one knew who she was, and now she's so successful. It's so great to see a hometown girl really make it legitimately."
Aside from seeing great live shows, carmensandiego can be found reading about music, be it "alt-country," Brit rock, or anything 60s. "I can always be counted on for a recommendation if you need one."
"I've met many wonderful people through Mog, several of whom helped pull me through a rough spell last year (They all know who they are, and I thank them all from the bottom of my heart)."
Currently a freelancer writer "languishing in public relations hell," carmensandiego can be found recording her musings on MOG, or appreciating the older music. "George Harrison, Van Morrison, Sam Cooke, Neil Young, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, they are all currently enjoying a renaissance in my stereo thanks to Mog."
She adds, "Something I would like, though, is to learn more about hip hop and jazz. So if any Moggers have suggestions as to 'the good stuff,' I'd love to hear it." and "Any Asheville Moggers, contact me!"
Stop by and say hello to carmensandiego!

mollifire: "While I was away from the internet for a whole week, I thought I would try getting my music "fix" from magazines. Think about how many bands I know currently in the same predicament and surviving off ramen, 5) Smirk at Bob's quote to Rollingstone per Disintegration "I realized at this time that, despite my best efforts, we had actually become everything that I didn't want us to become: a stadium rock band [laughs]." Mogger of the Week
Say hello to scotfree!
"I got the music bug when my first rock band S.A.L.T. toured the local Ohio schools, dances, and festivals back in '73," says scotfree, a self-described "International Operations Expert by day, musical spelunker by the light of the moon." At the time the unique approaches to rock in the early ’70s (Big Star, Roxy Music, Alice Cooper, Flash, David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Mott the Hopple), as well as early new wave (Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, The Clash and Big Audio Dynamite), "and all the great bands that poured out of NYC at the time," is what made the biggest impression on scotfree.
His favorite album New Nation by Roderick Falconer also comes out of the same era. "It's a very visual recording that electrifies the seedy and romantic side of ’30s to ’50s Americana. Each song is almost like a movie. The guy was billed as Appalachia's answer to Bowie, and after a short music career he went on to scriptwriting," scotfree shares. His obsession with music isn’t confined to just listening. Currently a tuba-less tuba player, scotfree has a small recording studio in his basement full of drums, guitars, and keyboards ("Yeah, I can kinda play them all," he says). scotfree connects to music through various means, as he recalls a favorite memory of "getting to know BAD II guitarist Nick Hawkins through the BAD message boards and doing some promo work for new projects with him after BAD broke up."
Through MOG scotfree has found an incredible list of artists to enjoy, among them British Sea Power, Asian Dub Foundation, Jose Gonzalez, Dengue Fever, Pinback, The Sugar Oaks, and "all the great reggae, African and other ethnic tunes that never cease to amaze. Needless to say, Moggers bring the best stuff!"
"I have made some of the best friends here at MOG. It's frequently a humbling and gratifying experience to hear new music and read the passionate, contemplative, sarcastic, and funny commentary that accompanies them. Thanks for bringing MOG to us!!"
Stop by say hi to scotfree!

What’s So Great About The Pixies!
Sageturk: "With the June 24th release of the groundbreaking Pixies album "Doolittle" on Rock Band, a little internet stir has arisen. Some are understandably stoked, others perplexed (how does one exactly sing along to Tame?), and some, the most vocal internet majority no doubt, antagonist. Sigh. Kids-These-Days....am I right? But then I think back and realize I was one of those kids and had to have my own mini come-to-pixies discussion with one far wiser than myself. Just like any band that redefines music and spawns a million interpreters, it's hard to know what was so thrilling when it's all been done since then - ad nauseaum. So, without further ado - and because there's never been a better time for it - a primer on the Pixies."

Mogger Album Reviews
Artist: John Hiatt
Album: Same Old Man
ted baylis: "I have to admit that I approached this CD not knowing much about John Hiatt except that he had written tunes for the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, Roseanne Cash and Three Dog Night. In my own closed-minded musical world, sandwiched somewhere in between Dylan and the Beatles, I had always considered him to be just another singer/songwriter. But that’s not quite the story. Hiatt’s music rocks when it should, and picks and strums in all the right places, but if anything sets it and him apart, it’s the stories he tells."

Artist: Ellen Allien
Album: Sool
mollifire: "I listened to this album three times before I could think of a single word to say about it. How does one review minimal techno that is built around the spaces between notes? How does one describe music that is created to emphasize silence?"

Artist: Lykke Li
Album: Youth Novels
Joxley: "The term "Scandinavian invasion" conjures up images of hirsute men in horned helmets, setting off in their longboats to rape and pillage – yet the latest crop of north European invaders are very different from their Viking forbears. From the feisty Ida Maria to the twee Those Dancing Days, the axe wielding berserkers have given way to indie pop temptresses. Yet it is the demure Lykke Li that has formed the vanguard of this assault, with her debut EP Little Bit gaining press and penetration on both sides of the Atlantic, now followed by album Youth Novels which aims to capitalise on this success, developing and refining this first taste which so whet the world’s appetite."

Artist: Robyn
Album: Robyn
zarkazstic: "In a world full of music royalty titles being flung around like a middle school lunch fight, I’ve decided to throw my metaphoric tater-tot into the air and declare that if pop has a princess, Robyn is the (not necessarily ugly) wicked step-sister who happens to make better music. Musically and lyrically, she’s the best parts of Daria and Janeane Garafalo’s wit, Lisa Loeb’s honesty, and Peaches or Lady Sovereign’s in-yo-facedness."

Artist: The Ruby Suns
Album: Sea Lion
Kronski: "There are bands and when you hear them, there are people that come to mind and just thinking about it puts you off of it. ‘That band sounds so weird, its like they’re trying to be weird,’ you can hear yourself say the first time you put the record on. It's the kind of record where if you put it on, people are going to roll their eyes and now you are one of those guys, who listens to cooler than cool music, obscure music for the love of being obscure."

Mogger of the Week
Say hello to ReadyToGo! http://mog.com/ReadyToGo
ReadyToGo hails from Panama, "the country, not the beach," she clarifies. Living in a small town a half hour from the city, she describes it as looking a lot like "those scenes in Hollywood movies of Tijuana or something."
"Panamenians are extremely warm and friendly," she says. "They will take you out, let you stay in their place, anything to make you feel good. And we/they party a lot for every single thing, even when we lose the football games!" However, in describing the city, she notes, "People here can have really fancy lives, while others just nothing at all […]. A lot of things need to grow, including our musicians […]. We don't have Hip Hop here, and that sucks cuz that's been growing on me lately."
"We do have an ‘underground’ scene, but the thing is Panama is such a small place, with less than 3 million habitants, so for people in bands it’s kinda hard, cuz you will get the same people in all your ‘shows,’ and it won't be more than 200 [people]. It gets kinda dull [for the bands] after 5 or 6 yrs playing."
Latin beats, salsa, mergengue and reggaeton are popular, and those who are into rock like bands like Fall Out Boy, says ReadyToGo. "My uncles were always playing Led Zeppelin and that 70's stuff, so I guess it kinda helped create my music taste."
ReadyToGo’s brother plays in a hardcore band. "Last weekend they opened for the Misfits! It was kinda cool for them." Other concert experiences she’s had date back to three years ago when ReadyToGo saw the White Stripes perform. "There were only, like, 400 people in a pretty large venue, What a shame."
She names The Strokes’ "Is This It" as her favorite album, an album that, alongside soungs by Kings of Leon and The Sounds, served as a beer-drinking soundtrack for her and her best friend when they were fifteen. "Even though I'm still young," she says, "I wish I [was] sixteen again."
Stop by and say hello to ReadyToGo!

Mission of Burma Performing Vs. at the Paradise 06/13/08
madrid spacestation spain: "Wow, what an incredible night, truly awesome in terms of the shows I have been to this year, which regrettably have not been as many as I usually shoot for. But on Friday, Roger Miller, Clint Conley, and Peter Prescott took the stage to a sudden swell of raucous cheers at the Paradise. Tonight was their second night here, the previous show highlighting their Signals, Calls, and Marches EP. For this 2nd bill, they would be showcasing the seminal album Vs. in all of its sonic/textural/immediate glory. This was Mission of Burma."

Ten Unlikely Hit Songs That Broke the Rules
Jon O: "Few songs that break the rules of pop songwriting ever achieve mainstream success. Deviate from the predictable verse/chorus structure in 4/4 time arranged for a basic grouping of guitar/keyboards, bass and drums, and you can pretty much guarantee being marginalized. During a 20-year period from roughly 1965-1985, however -- a period that witnessed a flowering of musical creativity and widespread openness to experimentation -- it was possible to break the rules and have a hit record. Here are ten unlikely hits from that period."

Why We MOG
Mike the Knife: "The other day, someone I know – a working actor - asked me if I was on Facebook or MySpace. I said no. When it comes to social networking sites, it’s just MOG for me. He was particularly adamant about a Facebook profile being beneficial to my Hollywood business. "Contacts, man!" he crowed. "It’ll help you get out there." As if I’m not in-your-face enough."

Jazzophobia
Bartleby: ""How do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways..." could be the title for all the rambling diatribes against jazz offered by my friend D. whenever our conversations turn to the subject of music that I like. (It so happens that I'm quite fond of the music of Satchmo)."

Nick Vivid’s Megaplatinum Festival at Trash Bar
DaveCromwell: "My new buddy Nick Vivid runs this Company called Megaplatinum Entertainment and told me about this festival he was having at Trash Bar (one of the coolest rock joints, not only in Brooklyn, but all of New York) […]. So it was Friday night June 6, 2008 that I headed on down to the cool ass Trash Bar to see what all the fuss was about."

Yumpalong Yanson - Money Comes, Money Goes
White and Nerdy: "Yumpalong was yet another Scandinavian-American comic artist that recorded in the early days of the last century. Singing silly songs about everyday life things, like not having enough cash. Yumpalong sings in the signature accent that typified such artists such as himself, Yogi Yorgesson, Stan & Doug and the handful of other artists of that time."

Basking Under the Big Black Sun
Celia Chavez: "Thanks to last night's last minute posting by fellow MOG'er Robin Danar, I was able to catch the Direct TV broadcast of X in concert at SXSW this year. I haven't seen them in a while, and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time - sometimes I forget that live, they're instrumentally a trio, and yet - they pack so much punch, even all these years after the songs were originally recorded."
