Mercy Street comes from one of my all-time favorite albums by Peter Gabriel, So. It is about the poet Anne Sexton, the title is taken from the name of her 1968 play 45 Mercy Street.

Here is a cover performed by the incomparable Happy Rhodes. Her 4 octave vocal range goes from the highs of Kate Bush to the lowest of Annie Lennox.

I must say I am REALLY enjoying your cover song of the day series. I perform a lot of cover songs myself and it's great you are bringing these forward to show us how different artists interpret the songs. I don't always have time to comment but I'm watching! This one in particular is a beautiful song and one of my favorites from So.

"Her 4 octave vocal range goes from the highs of Kate Bush to the lowest of Annie Lennox" -- that is a trip! I was like, wait, is she singing that or is that a man? she goes so high during the chorus and so low for the lyrics. Nuts! That's like Dave Letterman stupid human tricks material!

That description is right on. Amazing voice. Couldn't quite imagine it but when she started the second verse It sounded like a different person.
