Blog post image preview Al Green - Lay It Down (Blue Note, 2008) 7 out of 10 Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson did not make his love for Amy Winehouse's Back to Black a secret when it first came out, before "Rehab" was an international smash. He claimed on his Myspace blog that Black was the record he wanted Christina Aguilera to make. Thompson supposedly also wanted to produce the comeback of Bill Withers, but instead ended up with the Al Green project. Thompson's fascination with the feeling of some... MORE

It's been nearly a year since Al Green gave Billboard info on his new album Lay It Down, which was being produced by Questlove of The Roots. I don't remember the specifics, but I DO remember Al saying the music "was like fresh cream from a cow's titty". I'm not exactly sure what that meant, but it sounded good enough to embed itself into my memory. I won't have to wonder much longer, because Lay It Down will hit stores on May 27th via Blue Note records. Below you'll find a... MORE

If you're the type of music fan that gets sick of hearing the same run of the mill questions that journalists typically asks artists, this is the post for you. Late last week, ?uestlove held an impromptu Q&A session with fans on Okayplayer regarding his work on Al Green's new album. ?uest produced 10 tracks and attempted to give the album a hip hop perspective while still creating a true "Soul" r... Al Green has been recording a new album with ?uestlove on the production! Green says the new album is about "love and happiness, but the real kind. According to an article in the Belfast Telegraph:
"My next record is about the love and the happiness," he says. " My record is about the everyday life of a girl, guy, living together with one kid – we're not married yet but we're working on it, I'll drop off the kids if you'll pick them up. That's what my music is about – to

Sunday Under Covers :: Al Green does The Beatles

Here's something sweet for this Sunday morning: Al Green doing up "I Want To Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles. The original hit me with its infectious greatness when I was about 10. But Green transforms the song's teenage innocence and nostalgia into something sexy and funky. The horn lines and that swelling in the bridge are enough to make you want to stay under those covers...

[Just to point out the obvious: it would be a fair point to argue that this is more a new creation... MORE

Blog post image preview When Al Green turned away from secular music toward the end of the 70's, a lot of folks turned away from Al Green. On a purely musical level those folks missed out.If you caught the direction the Rev. was going in his last few secular records,self-produced with some of his own acoustic guitar playing and hints of Funk (The Belle Album and Have a Good time), his first gospel records weren't a whole lot different.Fact is, he was singing better than ever. Check these tunes fr... MORE

Say you have to be at work at six-thirty in the morning. And say you go to bed at ten-thirty. Then let's say you look at the clock and it says eleven-thirty, and you think to yourself, "Wow, I'm pretty much not tired." Say all those things happen, and when they happen, what do you do? Do you think to yourself, "Boy, I bet I know someone else who isn't sleeping, and I bet that someone else wouldn't be averse to drinking gin until last call?" Do you, moments after havi... MORE

You can discover great songs in the strangest places

I was accidentally watching the TV show "Jesse" (starring Christina Applegate) one night, several years ago, and I accidentally kept watching the damn thing, and I can't even recall the plot now, it has morphed into mush, but at one point, toward the end of this particular episode, Christina Applegate is having a potential moment with her love interest, and this song starts playing. The delicate guitar-drum intro had me hooked all by itself, but then the first words are su... MORE
