props to Madison house and AEG for generally pulling off the first annual Rothbury Music festival this weekend. there were no major glitches, the crowd was very cool and the main stage sound was excellent. observations: the site and amenities were excellent, and it makes bonnaroo look like a concentration camp. with attendance at around 35,000, the place was perfectly comfortable. it was ultra fan friendly, though clearly the promoters need another 10,000 to make it ... Southern rockers Drive-By Truckers will release their eighth studio album, titled Brighter Than Creation's Dark, on January 22, 2008. The album is dedicated to legendary Muscle Shoals keyboardist Spooner Oldham, who also appears on the David Barbe-produced album. The inaugural lineup of the San Francisco Outside Lands Festival at Golden Gate Park is online now. The dates to post on your calendar are Aug. 22-24. I was mad when I first saw that Radiohead was playing, but playing with Jack Johnson of all people, but now, with the whole lineup , I have to rethink this.

Just got the new Drive-By Truckers album, and as to be expected it is FANTASTIC. Much better than their last album (which was alright in my book).
Cooley must have sold his soul to the devil, because his songs are over the top good.

DBT's new CD, "Brighter Than Creations Dark", has just been marked as one my favorite albums. I have to say that every song on there is incredible. I definitely suggest to all of you who are debating on downloading, buying or whatever it is you do when purchasing music, get this album. It's one of those cd's that you can listen the whole way through without changing a track. I'm usually not this bold when it comes to an album but this one struck me. Anyway for your enjoy... MORE

Having now been alerted to the existence of Drive-By Truckers, I've been going through their back catalog. I tried The Dirty South next, and was especially impressed with "Where the Devil Don't Stay." Then I got Southern Rock Opera, which seems to be their magnum opus. I can't decide whether the openness with which they wear their Lynyrd Skynyrd worship is naive, audacious, or both. It sounds to me like the musical equivalent of Babe Ruth calling his shot.
