Initially airing on the US Sundance channel in December, Elvis Costello is currently recording a series of thirteen hour long TV shows with a collaborative music/informal interview format. Distribution to Canada and the UK has also been guaranteed. Before Elvis Costello got all highbrow on me (okay, I do love his work with The Fairfield Four and shouldn't he be "Sir Elvis" by now?), he wrote the song Green Shirt. A song that I had forgotten I loved. The lyrics...wait... take these for instance: "cause somewhere in the quisling clinic there's a shorthand typist taking seconds over minutes" are right up there briliance-wise with Lewis Caroll's poem Jabberwocky. What's a "quisling clinic"?

Last week I finally completed a project that began about a month ago - digitizing my Elvis Costello collection, about half or more of which I only owned on vinyl or cassette. This song, Hoover Factory, is a demo from the bootleg 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong. It wisely leads off the 2-disc boot. Is sporting a band t-shirt a thing of the past? I hope not. Of all the shirts (collared and collarless) I own, I'd say roughly 75% are music or band related. Like so many big-name musicians these days, Elvis Costello will also release his next album in an "alternative" way. Costello's new solo studio album, Momofuku, will be released solely on vinyl with a digital download code included. The album is being released by Lost Highway on April 22nd. I remember an interview with Elvis Costello, where he talked about this song. He wrote it on his 45th birthday, and he said it just sorta spilled out of him, all the different contexts of the number. I think it was kind of a mid-life pondering on not being young, and not quite being old. Whatever the inspiration was, it's some of the finest crafted lyrics put to a catchy melody I have ever heard.
