The King's beloved peacock jumpsuit sold at auction yesterday for $300k, the largest amount ever for a piece of Elvis memorabilia.
Hot, ain't it? From the AP article: Presley paid $10,000 to have the outfit made by Los Angeles designer Bill Belew, who created all of The King's stage wardrobe between 1968-1977. It captured the rock 'n' roll legend's fascination with peacocks as a good luck symbol and the auction house said it was among his favorite Belew designs. E... MORE

Rode through the Mojave Desert this past weekend, going from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and back again on business (with a side order of pleasure). It was a 24-hour round trip marked by arid climate (temperatures reaching 112); tacky glitz; the occasional celeb strutting around the disco’s V.I.P. section or sitting in the front row at the boxing match; and a transient population of wide-bodied Middle Americans sucking down drinks, fast and slow food, and the high-oxygen atm... meme stolen from a friend

1. What's your favorite band? If the real question is "who is your favorite musical artist," then the answer is Bruce Springsteen. If they really insist on a band, it would either be The Velvet Underground or Sleater-Kinney. 2. Do you play an instrument? I played bass in a garage band as a youth. 3. Sing? I can carry a tune. I wouldn't consider that noteworthy, but the one time I went to karaoke with friends, I found that I was in the minority.

4. Write lyrics? I wrot... MORE

After The King's return from the army in 1960, his manager, Colonel Tom Parker negotiated a seven year, multi picture deal for Elvis. Elvis had previously stated in interviews that he wished to be taken seriously as a film actor.Unfortunately, this would not turn out to be the case. The films Elvis starred in became increasingly formulaic parodies of himself as a musician or otherwise musically inclined character. This severely limited Presley's ability to record substant... Elvis Presley - His Hand In Mine (1960)

(396)
Blog post image preview ELVIS PRESLEY - HIS HAND IN MINE (1960) One often forgets that Presley was steeped in Religious music and it's ironic that for all the media controversey that accompanied his career, he was a deeply Spiritual artist. "His Hand In Mine" was the first of a number of Gospel albums that Elvis recorded during his career, and of these, this is often regarded as his best. He would say that all of his music came from Gospel, citing the fact that he knew every Gospel song that ha... MORE

Album: From Nashville To Memphis: Essential 60s Masters
Track: I'll Be Home Again
(294)
Growing up, Elvis and his parents didn't have much money. Growing up in the rural south, there were not many opportunities to make very much money, after a while, the family drifted up to the town of Memphis, the largest town goin round those parts. When Elvis started to make money, though, he bought himself and his parents a proper home in east Memphis. It was soon to be discovered, a home in a normal neighborhood offered no security or deterrents from rabid fans who vis... MORE

friday random ten, 1968 edition

Free music video of One Night (26)
I should confess in advance that 1968 is probably my favorite year for music. Note I didn't say best ... but so many of my favorites come from this year. Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, which always makes my all-time top ten lists. My favorite Stones' album, Beggars Banquet. Lady Soul and Music from Big Pink, the Velvets and Hendrix, Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and the Beatles' "Hey Jude," Sly and the Family Stone and Dusty Springfield, and a lot of album...
