Back in 1988, a compilation came out on A&M called Stay Awake. It featured a cornucopia of artists covering tunes from Disney movies. Some of these versions were very inspired; some, not so much; and some were downright bizarre. I had the pleasure of discovering an incredible album yesterday, thanks to NYC's best radio station WFUV (yes, NYC radio is pretty awful these days, but FUV is one of the few exceptions, and delightfully non-commercial). The album is Los Lobos' 1992 release Kiko. The sound of the Latin Playboys is just purely stunning - I don't know what else to say. I'm a great admirer of Los Lobos – “La Pistola y El Corazon” is one of my favorite songs, and the album with the same name is one of my favorite records. That smiling face you see in the upper left hand corner passed away on Friday at the ripe old age of 15-1/2. They broke the mold when he was born. This being MOG, his favorite band was Los Lobos and his favorite song was "Shakin', Shakin', Shakes" which was appropriate because he had epilepsy. RIP dude.

Now that I am emerging from my January musical slump, I've been able to re-discover some of my favorite bands. I walked into the store and I had to purchase three new CD's. I found on the shelves Los Lobos, Wolf Tracks. Granted I'm not much for purchasing The Best Of...... CD's, but when I find that my collection is lacking, it's a nice way to acquire some of your favorite tracks all at one time. It's an old story - something that has happened to all of us and is a staple of Hollywood movies (Think Donna Reed in _It's a Wonderful Life_ or Audrey Hepburn in _Sabrina_) - A buddy's younger sister, say 4-5 years younger & pleasant but at an ackward age - you head off to college and don't ever give her a second thought - 10 years later you come back to town for Christmas and run into your buddy and discover his sister who has blossomed into this gorgeous, witty, and sop... I am listening to Los Lobos' upcoming release The Town and the City. Now, I've always had a certain respect for these guys; they're hard-working, skilled players with a competent finger dipped into multiple genres, emphasizing rock, soul, and traditional Mexican styles (and they're great live almost no matter what). Often times, though, despite David Hidalgo's silky-sweet vocals (one of the more soulful voices in modern pop), the material doesn't edge past "genre-standard.... MORE

The East L.A. roots rock band Los Lobos will have a new album - their 14th - released on September 12. The Town And The City was produced by Tchad Blake, who previously worked with the band on Kiko and This Time, and was a member of the Los Lobos side project, the Latin Playboys. Los Lobos are back. This (was "playing" "Maria Christiana" from LL live at The Catalyst, Santa Cruz, CA, Sept.4, 2005) is a pretty solid recording of a favorite song by "my" band. (We all have a few bands that we think we "discovered" 'cause we saw them live before they were hit it big. Thus, LL is "my" band.) Hard to underestimate the effect LL music has on my overall tastes. I first saw them in '77 or '78 in Ventura, CA, I think. Certainly reinforces a bias I have towards bands/musicians ... MORE
