For now, 2009 seems to be looking up for hip-hop heads. The man himself, mighty Mos Def, is set to release his fourth studio LP, The Ecstatic, February 10 via Downtown Records. The Brooklyn-based rapper's last album, 2006's Tru3 Magic (TMT Review), was a critical success, but a commercial failure, only selling 93,000 copies. (This was partly due to poor promotion by his previous label, Geffen Records.)

The incredible artists/activists Dr. Cornell West and Mos Def laid some knowledge on the table on Bill Maher's show a few days ago. I adore the combined energies of West and Def. Mos Def has so much charisma and a fantastic sense of humour, he keeps the energy up and helps the audience keep up and keep paying attention. Dr. Cornell West has the deep voice and elegance of a professor and a Panther. They complement each other perfectly. If Adam Yauch and Mos Def will ru... MORE

... but the login didn't want to take me... maybe someone else is logged in r/n... Michelle's post has moved me deeply... here's what I felt after reading it, and feeling it... it's just rambling as usual... nowhere as thought out and wonderful as Michelle's words, or Chris' pieces... but I know you'll bear with me. I know one day I'll get "perspective" back... Listen here and read, if you like... You can imagine how I feel on a personal level... The way he touched my ... MORE

This past Tuesday Mos Def put out the first single, "Life In Marvelous Times", off of his next album The Ecstatic, on Itunes. Let me just clear the air and say this song is refreshing to hear. I’ve been a big Mos Def fan since way back in the day when the Black Star album [...]

Alright, since somebody out there obviously doesn't want any new Mos Def to be heard by the people, I'll serve up some unreleased/unofficial shit. I hope people are gettin excited for Mos' new material, because he goes hard and if nothing else, he's one of the most honest emcees out there. Pretty good actor too. Ever seen Something The Lord Made ?
Anyway, there was a whole album made mixing up Mos over some DOOM beats and vice versa. It's a cool idea, and I think if ... MORE

STREAM: Mos Def - Life In Marvelous Times (via RCRD LBL )
Typically when delving into the pasts of my fellow bloggers, most of them found or fell in love with hip hop from the Wu-Tang Clan or any early 90's positive mc group that made a minor splash. For me, I was sucked in by Black Star 's self-titled Rawkus debut (and sadly, only record ) featuring Mos Def and Talib Kweli. From there, I not only followed their careers, but most of the Rawkus roster, as well as enjoying... MORE
