For a bit there I was really loving Roni Size. His New Forms album hit me at an interesting time in my life and so despite the fact that I have never been a big drum and bass fan, I always enjoyed his jazz breaks aesthetic and texture. This was also around the end of an era when I would only listen to East Coast (NY) hip-hop. Yup, I said it! Biggie's Life After Death dropped on March 25, 1997. Ten years and two days before Redman's release date, March 27, 2007. I've just listened to Red Gone Wild once through, and I can say without hesitation that there hasn't been a hip-hop album this good, this complete in at least a decade. My two most anticipated albums of the year hit the 'net today! Actually, Red hit yesterday, but...whichever. Redman's Red Gone Wild (Thee Album) and Timbaland's Timbaland Presents Shock Value are both floating around on the webs today, I don't see me getting any work done at all today. A few days ago I got a package from Troy with Redman’s latest cd and a massive mix of Troy’s favorite Redman tunes – my Redman primer. I’ve been listening to it for the past couple evenings and, the verdict is that it’s pretty damn cool stuff. Now, the rap I normally like has a lot going on – a lot of samples, a lot of layers, and tongue twisting speed. Redman seems to strip everything way back without making the music bland.
