When I was a little kid - barely nine - my parents sent me off to boarding school in England. It was every bit as bad as I'd imagined, and I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

ONce upon a time, a million years ago, (ok maybe 10,) I stumbled across this VHS performance of Roxy Music on a German television show called MusikLaden. I squealed with glee and took it home and auditorially masturbated several times in a row. but somehow, someday in the midst of a romantic meltdown with an ex, the video got put in his stuff and carted away.

You've gotta love this 1979 classic from Roxy Music's "Manifesto" album - "Angel Eyes". There are two versions of the song, a rock version, and the disco version, which is the video we have here that was released as a single. The visuals in the video are hysterical - Bryan Ferry as the pastel lounge singer, Phil Manzanera playing twangy guitar and looking like an insect, Andy MacKay with his hair puffed up, drummer Paul Thompson looking like he was thown into a spaceman outfi... I bought my first Roxy Music album while I was still in high school. It's not such a big thing for some but I did grow up in West Texas. The internet wasn't something widespread enough for most of us to have access to and it was still a very isolated place in 1996. I would go to the library and search through the periodical sections for bands that I liked and read old interviews in magazine anthologies dating back to the early '80s. If I was getting on a spaceship and had only one record to take with me to infinity, I think Roxy Music's "Avalon" would be an easy pick. Everyone seems to pick the title track or "More Than This" as their fave off the CD, but for me, it's a slightly more obscure track "The Main Thing". Totally tasty playing, great video, rarely seen.

It was an intense flashback, this past Saturday night. Immediately I felt the millimeter thin headphones on my head, the eyelet sheets covering my chest, one spongy quarter-size removable headphone resting under my ear, to the bed.
