At L.A.'s El Rey Theatre in 2003, the year after the release of Murray Street, I saw Sonic Youth play, amidst a full set, a song from that album called "Karenology." (It's called "Karen Revisited" on the tracklist; they've since retitled it.) Murray Street uses a relatively subdued palette for a band known for its tende... MORE
...I think that inrumford sent a small band of eyebrow grooming concubines to kidnap the poor guy. Even now he's probably being held, used as a sex slave, his only function is to please every depraved whim of lust that crosses their sinful minds. He's probably chained to a feather bed somewhere, totally helpless, forced to fulfill every perverted desire, being fed just enough to keep him alive & healthy, maybe a little pot & alcohol to alleviate his guilt & shame.... Macadam, macadam, cement, macadam, macadam, grass, macadam, cement, macadam ... A dog barks. I can tell he's not a big dog. He had a higher pitch that a barrel chest won't allow. I don't think he was a hound, just didn't have that hound sound. Cool nights. 34 some and 40 others. On cool clear nights with a little humidity and some wind I become bulletproof. Something entirely different from what I should be. Walking home with a six of Porter I became hyper aware. Voices... MORE
11- 6 - 09 This morning Alex and I started the 9 mile walk to the Army/Navy store in Whitehall I was told by an 'R' there may be some ammunition buried behind the store. If we find it I promised that I would give the 'R' a box of 12 gauge shells. Tami and Bay stayed behind to scavenge around the Westgate area for canned goods and warmer clothes. Winter has been brutal since the first snow in August which means I'll have to look for firewood along the Monocacy that is bef... MORE
As the smoke was rising it got beat by the unstable wobble of the ceiling fan. "Off balance blades." I thought. One of these days that is coming down on my head. My heart kept time with the spinning. I tasted the metal in my own blood and had a dull muffed noise in the back of my head. Staggering to get up I couldn't help but notice there were parts of me missing. "Oh man, this is what happens when you get hit by a truck?" The impact isn't so bad but the roll under is w... MORE
I posted this track not to long ago. It seemed appropriate again.
Has anyone elses notifications gone hinky?
Sonic Youth just don't know when to stop do they? And that's a good thing for us. At last week's McCarren Pool in Brooklyn, the indie-rock legends played the last show ever there by opening with two new songs. The songs are so new that they neither have titles nor lyrics. Though Thurston Moore explained to crowd that the band had just began writing material for their new album a few days ago, hence the lack of lyrics, the audience treated the brand new songs as though they... I had been waiting for this one for a while. Discovering that New York City's own - the legendary Sonic Youth - were going to be playing a live free concert at Battery Park in downtown NYC as part of seminal college radio station WFMU's 50th anniversary (and the RiverToRiver festival that has been ongoing throughout the summer) I knew I had to attend. So, filling out the necessary online applications (you still had to have a ticket to get in, even though it was free), I... MORE
