Brooklyn's TV On The Radio are starting to spice up their Web site tvontheradio.com with new promos for their third full-length Dear Science, due September 23rd. The first? Streaming the album's first single, titled "Golden Age." Not to be confused with the Beck song title of the same name, the TVOTR track is reminiscent of Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" but eventually morphs into the band's trademark spacey sound. TV On The Radio's second album, Return To Cookie Mountain (2006) divided its audience. Some were disappointed, others think they'll never top it. It was an oppressive wall of sound that accomplished exactly what it set out to do. It was a dark, prickly, heavy album that took me two months to properly absorb, and still holds up two years later. "Just because it's weird doesn't make it genius." I don't know why I put quotes around that first line. I don't think anyone famous or worthy of a real "quote" has necessarily said it. I just happen to agree with it. So as I was walking home from work today on 14th st., I passed by the outside of an Urban Outfitters, and heard Dear Science, playing from inside the store. I know the album has downtown NYU appeal, and that you can't get the attitude of lyrics from speakers in a clothing store. Still, though, I didn't expect such a politically angry album to be playing in the store and it irked me in a strange way. Like the rest of their catalog, TV On The Radio's latest album, Dear Science,, is a complex, fibrous beast -- and it's their most accessible album! Suffice to say, I'm not quite ready for a full review, but I'm more than impressed enough to leave you with "Dancing Choose" as your weekend jam.
