For the third time this year I was present for a show by The Mountain Goats and like all their other shows it was completely different from any set I've ever seen them do. There were old tunes and new tunes, and of course there was a whole section of the show devoted to the new EP the band just released with their tour mate Kaki King. It was a solid show as always, with John Darnielle playing the

Mountain Goats, Heretic Pride (4AD) eight out of ten stars I love John Darnielle’s songs. He writes from the heart. So how could I review his new album, Heretic Pride from my head? There will be little deep analysis or calculated critique here. Listening to his songs feels like sitting on a ledge, waiting to cry. The Mountain Goats' Artist Lounge suggests that no one on MOG has yet picked up and passed on this streamable track from The Mountain Goats' new EP collab with Ms. Kaki King, a streamable track which hit Pitchfork a month ago, so I guess I will go ahead and do that thing. I've got it on infinite repeat on my Media Player now, and it's really neat the way the ending keeps dovetailing into the beginning (the intro makes the ending sound like a false one). Last night I downloaded the new Mountain Goats album, Heretic Pride (yes, I do intend on buying it) and I am so glad that John Darnielle has managed to produce yet another stunning record. I don't want to use the phrase 'their best yet' because I've only listened to it twice through, and because that's a very grand statement, but it is definitely a contender in my opinion. The album comes across as slightly more upbeat than previous ones, but the lyrics are mostly typica... MORE

I love when bands include Alaska on their tour maps. But, I don't know of any non-Alaskan bands who have ever started their US tour from the arctic state! It's possible that Mountain Goats will be the first to do so. John Darnielle and friends announced a west coast US tour that starts in Anchorage, stops in B.C. and heads south to West Hollywood. The fun starts on February 19th and continues until March 5th with Jeffrey Lewis and the Jitters supporting in the lower 48... MORE
