Classic Hip Hop Vids Vol.3 - Notorious B.I.G. - Hypnotize

Free music video of Hypnotize (15)
If you ask the average person what music video personified "The Bling Era" of hip hop, most would mention Cash Money Records. Although they coined the term "bling" and made a video by the same name, they were out gunned by Puff Daddy at their own game. Biggie Smalls wasn't known as a bling rapper, and isn't remembered as a bling rapper, but his vid for "Hypnotize" was the first of it's kind. I'm not saying that Hypnotize was the first video made where a rapper flaunted hi... MORE

Blog post image preview How gangster is that? In The Hieghts, a Broadway musical which takes place in the New York City Latino neighborhood of Washington Heights, took home 4 Tonys Sunday night. The play contained elements of hip hop, salsa, merengue, and and Soul. "The writer and composer of In The Heights, Lin-Manuel Miranda, previously founded a Hip Hop improvisational theater troupe called "Freestyle Love Supreme." Eventually, he took his talents to the Broadway stage" You can see Lin Man... MORE

Funk? George Clinton, Bootsy, Parliament? Yeah, they're all cool. But today, we kick it off with funk of the machine gun flavor (with a little bit of penis power thrown in for the A. :p)!

[Dammit I Missed] Hip-Hop Thursday: Your Reign On The Top Was Short Like Leprechauns

(96)
Today's song is one of my favorite tracks from Biggie's final (real) album, Life After Death. Not only is it a great song with stellar production by DJ Premier, the opening skit with The Mad Rapper is hilarious.

Mog Blog #2: I Got A Story To Tell

Artist:
Album: Ready To Die; Life After Death
Blog post image preview Last evening while out & about on the town, I managed to score original copies of the two albums that comprise what I consider the "Official" Notorious B.I.G. discography. Ready to Die (pictured above) and Life After Death (pictured below) are both excellent examples of mid-late 90's hip-hop. All of the post-humous albums that have been released and make up the full Biggie catalog pale in comparison to these two classic (as far as I'm concerned anyway) records which were a... MORE

Who called that muthafucka a DJ?!!?

You know what really grinds my gears? I don't know how it works with rock DJs, or country or whatever other kinds of DJs there are, but it's very common when a hip-hop DJ gets into his thing, you won't hear a single song played all the way through. You'll get a verse, a hook, or sometimes just part of the beat to a song before he's off to his next joint. And if the DJ knows what he's doing, this is a good thing. There's just this art of stacking the anticipation. You... MORE

Biggie's Fam Files New Suit Against Rogue Cops

Artist:
Track:
Blog post image preview The family of The Notorious B.I.G has filed a new suit against the city of Los Angeles and two dirty cops this monday. The Suit names former officers Raphael Perez and Nino Durden as prominent roleplayers in the rappers death. The suit claims Perez was gang related, and affilated with Suge Knight's Death Row Records at the time biggie was killed. It is sai that Perez also “made specific statements that he, together with David Mack, conspired to murder and participated in t... MORE

On Hip-Hop Thursdays, All we wanna do is...

Artist:
Album: Who's the Man? [Original Soundtrack]
Track:
(64)

Man, in spring of '93, when this dropped, who knew The Notorious B.I.G. (then, credited simply as "Big") would become what he became. Hell, back then, the fat, ugly bastard (his own words) couldn't even get his picture on the cover of the single (pictured above). Well, thank GOD that in the end, the music spoke for itself.
This is still my favorite Biggie track, simply because it's on some fun shit. All I ever wanted to do was party & bullshit!

On my main blog, I talk about the 10th anniversary of the death of The Notorious B.I.G. Among the things I mention are how I found out about Biggie's death and the surprising differences between Ready To Die and Life After Death. I really wanted to write something a bit more in-depth but I couldn't find the words at the moment. In a side note, how pathetic was it that 106 & Park's tribute to Biggie was to show a couple minutes of a megamix that Rap City showed in its ... MORE
