Many of us came to the conclusion last week that 2 minutes and 42 seconds is the perfect length for a pop song, after reading a post by Joshua Allen posted this article on The Morning News.
According to Wired.com's Listening Post there's been a bit of a brou-ha-ha over the very originality of the idea for that article.
Apparently John Scalzi, of the blog "Whatever" posted a similar theory in December of 2004. So is a blog post like a melody, picked up and re contextualized ... MORE

We'd Like to Thank You Once Again

(98)
There's a subset of Beatles fans who eagerly seek out the band's "rarities" - the various edits of "Christmas Time Is Here Again," for instance, or The Beatles' version of "Come and Get It," etc. But few of these enthusiasts, to my experience, have paid adequate attention to the original mono mixes, especially of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Magical Mystery Tour. I myself haven't heard either one since they inexplicably vanished from my record collection twe... MORE

Blog post image preview From Bloomberg.com By Jeremy Gerard The news flash from Washington crossed my computer screen like a lightning bolt of reality ripping through the Joshua Light Show at a Grateful Dead concert. This was the disturbing story: Alcohol and drug use figure heavily in popular music, according to a study of lyrics to 279 songs presented yesterday at a conference of public health practitioners. As a result, the study revealed, impressionable teens are getting the impression ... MORE

Of course. You had to see it coming. Maybe not a psychedelic band per sé, but definitely the people responsible for teaching little billy how to "drop out." The long standing rumor is that the title was code for LSD. Well if the drugs didn't give you flash backs, then Yellow Submarine probably did. I probably would have chosen I Am The Walrus, Glass Onion, or even Revolution #9 as trippier, but this is definitely one of the ground breakers.

Before anyone jumps down my throat, it's not my opinion, it's an article in today's Irish Times. Still, a pinch of salt to go with a generous helping of Beatles adulation does no harm. Just strange that the IT website lists this as an editorial piece... David Adams It has a few decent tracks, but they stand in stark contrast with the surrounding acres of self-indulgent, Goon-like nonsense. You simply do not find the likes of When I'm Sixty-Four, Lovely Rita, or the twi... MORE

Been lost in a bit of a dream this gloomy morning. Sitting at a traffic light, I pondered my current surreal state of being and as I change the station on the radio, what do I hear? _A Day In The Life_, the song that epitomizes the state between dreams and reality in my own psyche (and quite possibly, the greatest song I've ever encountered). The line "he didn't notice that the lights had changed" comes right as the light changes, and off I drive....

"On the bus to my office, the radio played 'And I Love Her' and a Portuguese immigrant my grandmother's age sang along. . . . "One hundred years from now Beatles songs may be so well known that every child will learn them as nursery rhymes, and most people will have forgotten who wrote them. They will h... MORE
