Artist: Rolling Stones
Album: Flowers

I was just listening to the remastered CD version of "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing in the Shadows?" and was completely blown away by Bill Wyman's completely frantic playing (or is it Keith playing bass on this track?). I never noticed it before. I found some quotes online of the Stones complaining about the original single's mix of the rhythm section:

"I liked the track, I hated the mix. Mainly because there was a fantastic mix of the thing, which was just right. But because they were in a rush and they needed to edit it down for the Ed Sullivan Show - 'cause we were booked to play our latest single which was gonna be Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow? - the mix was rushed and the essential qualities of it, for me, disappeared. Because... just because of the lack of time, you know..." - Keith Richards, c. 1982

"It needed another couple weeks. The rhythm section is almost lost completely." - Keith Richards, 1971

"Keith always felt that the incorrectly mixed version was released as the single. The rhythm section is buried in the mix and it failed to create as much excitement as we all felt it should have done. Although we took longer to record and mix this single than any of our previous releases, Keith always felt it needed more - this was the beginning of the future!" - Bill Wyman, Rolling With The Stones, 2002

I'll have to listen to my vinyl album version and compare it. But the new mix is stellar, so check it out! And the feedback drenched solo at the end is killer!

Always loved this song, but never had this remix you speak of to compare it to. Thanks for the tip, been meaning to get some 60s Stones on cd anyway. (I have this on 45, but just some reissue with a generic sleeve; is Mick the one besides Brian in the mod gear? Cool. Hey, I'm in Alameda; where are you tippling?

Don't hit the bars much but I'm right down the street from Lucky 13, so that's the only one I usually hit.

Re. who plays bass on the track: I haven't looked it up, but if it's amazing it's probably Bill. Compare the studio version of Live With Me with Keith on bass to the live Get Yer Ya Ya's out version with Bill on bass. Keith's a great guitarist, Bill's a great bass player, I think the Stones stand out among rock bands because the best thing about them is the rhythm section (which, at times, is the whole band).

An enthusiastic second for the idea of the Stones' rhythm section as its standout feature. I don't think they've been the same since Wyman skipped.
